Also, given how old these games are, I'd hope this be a significantly cheaper style to emulate now, whereas at the time, both of the above games were apparently cutting edge graphically.ī. It looks alien and like you're in another world, which I don't think is just because they happen to be speculative settings in both cases. I feel like you could make a really interesting looking game using the above style. I'm really interested in this style because,Ī. More than that, I don't know why the games looked like that, because it doesn't seem to quite come from technical constraints the same way games on the Playstation 1 were constrained. It wasn't everywhere at the time, as say, neither of the Diablo games or Nox looked like the above, and I don't remember any RPGs that had the above art style. Relating this back to Voodoo graphics, I remember spending a lot of time as a kid playing games that looked like the above art style, with games like Heavy Gear 2*, Sacrifice, ect., but, I find it hard to describe the above visual style. I'm not going to link images, because they are horror games, but, just look up the Power Drill Massacre if you want an example. In that case, the ugliness of the textures is a strength, because it makes the game harsh and, dare I say, "gritty," while also, I'd hope at least, saving the developers a lot of money through being so much lower in texture quality. For a recent example of this, and you can find examples present on Itch.Io of this, it seems a fair number of people have been emulating PSX/PS1 graphics to make horror games, and using how harsh those graphics were to make terrifying games. See, I bring all this up because I've been thinking recently about graphical styles that indie game makers could emulate from the past. well, I have some thoughts I want to explore on that. Now, on a technical level this makes sense, but in art style? Now, to be fair, graphics do constrain an art style, and it seems 3D games kind of have to look this way at the time, on the PC at least, and. The above is from Dark Reign 2, which despite having a radically different setting, has some similarities in art styles, and looks very similar graphically.
